WHAT WE DO
Haka Translate provides a free, simultaneous English translation service throughout live stage performances at the biennial Te Matatini National Kapa Haka Festival. In 2019, during Te Matatini ki te Ao, a multilingual service will be provided with the introduction of Mandarin translations.
Haka Translate (formerly Hakarongo Mai) aired its first translated broadcast in 2007 after Te Matatini festival organisers recognised a need to cater for the signficant numbers of tourists and English speaking audiences attending the festival.
The service has continued to grow in popularity, and demand, with subsequent festivals in Tauranga Moana, Gisborne, Rotorua, Christchurch and Hastings.
Our Haka Translate team for Te Matatini 2019: Dr Te Rita Papesch [Presenter], David Jones [Presenter], Oriini Kaipara [Presenter], Rawiri Waru [Presenter], Lidu Gong [Presenter], George Burt [Technical Engineer], Erana Fenton [Assistant Technical Engineer] Tracey Eparaima [Broadcast Director | Production Manager], Tina Karaitiana [Broadcast Admin Support}, and Wi Pere Mita [Executive Producer] .
The Haka Translate service is proudly supported by Te Matatini and Te Mangai Paho
